This was the third in the series of lectures. This class was taken by Prof. Anton Musgave. Sharing my class notes - Prof. is from South Africa and he started off with sharing his experiences in the current turnmoil the country is facing. More here. It was good to hear that he and his family was safe. Also, he shared how citizens came together to prevent spread of this outbreak by working with the govt. and offering a human shield to prevent further looting in the country. Since, this class was on leadership and strategy, he shared few quotes that I have taken note of - Never say 'empower your people'. July 14, 2021 - this was the 2nd class in the series taken by Prof. Ranga. Sharing my notes below -

- A quote from Robert H. Schuller - "Anyone can count the seeds in an apple, but only god can count the no. of apples in a seed."
- Have big goals - "Eat elephant bit by bit"
- Purpose of life is to live a life of purpose
- Identity of yourself
- Difference between contempment vs complacency
- Leaders need to inspire a shared vision
- Have goals with purpose. Goals --> Purpose
- Convert fear to risks. Fear --> Risks
- Inspired vs Impressed?
- Inspired - embibe it in our lives, brings change in day to day life, belief system needs to change
- Why should someone be inspired by me?
- No one can inspire anyone else
- There is story of how King Robert Bruce got inspired by a spider after he hid post his defeat in a battle. More here
- Anchor on inspiration is on others
- When the student is ready, teacher appears
- Leaders need to build an environment of trust, they need to focus on building a climate that is deep and positive
- There is a 4 step approach -
- Create excitement
- Build alignment
- Manage conflicts
- Demonstrate progress

- People live in their minds. A leader needs to share mindspaces
- Feedback can be only be given when there is trust
- Feedback is shared on a behaviour and not on a person
- FIST technique:
- F: Focus on Fact and not on opinion
- I: Focus on facts that bring high Impact
- S: Have clear Strategy
- T: Build an environment of Trust
- Prof. shared a snippet from Lagaan where the protagonist, Bhuvan (Amir Khan) is trying to motivate villagers to get them play cricket
- Now if you analyse the scene, you would notice the villagers avoid joining Bhuvan as -
- they lack sense of belief - that they can play cricket
- they lack vision - that they can get freedom from lagaan
- Now, what did Bhuvan do to motivate villagers -
- He followed the approach of feedback followed by coaching - he showed each of them to see small success to make them believe in their ability to play cricket
- Any crucial conversation can have three corner pillars -
- Opposing views
- High Stakes
- Strong emotions
- Courage without tact and tact without courage - both are failures
- Tact -
- Identify common ground
- Have relentless focus on objective
- Avoid expressing disagreement
- Leadership is an action and not a position
- Leaders walk in a direction wit huge conviction & turn around to check if people are following
